Afternoon/Evening at Work a Success

September 24th, 2006 by Benjamin

I came in this Sunday afternoon/evening to work to get a few things done while no one else was in the office.  Sometimes a project requires me to be logged onto and observing many of the different workstations around the office.  Being here when no one else is really helps me get such a project done quickly.  I love that feeling of accomplishment when I go home at the end of such a session knowing I really got something good done for work.

Tonight I was working on making sure my VMWare image deployment would go smoothly.  We are an IT help desk and we use VMware to enable our consultants to help customers through problems on older operating systems.  I have created Vmware virtual machines for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2K, and XP (so a consultant can really get in there and change settings without having to worry about screwing up his system) on my machine at work and then I deploy them via Robocopy and an elaborate batch script to each of the workstations.  This allows me to manage one central set of Virtual machines and update them once a month (for the ones that get new patches) and re-deploy them.

I had a minor problem having to do with NTFS permissions on all the workstations where when a consultant would try and open the virtual machine, she would get an error telling her she didn’t have enough access rights.  About an hour and I had figured out the exact set of NTFS permissions required to give the consultants just enough access to be able to operate the virtual machines.

Having figured out the situation quicker than I figured I would, I turned my sights on my next agenda item: re-arranging my cubicle.  I seem to do this more than anyone else at work.  I can’t help it.  I get bored with my setup.  The last time I re-arranged, I really wasn’t satisfied with the layout I had arrived at.  This time I believe I have utilized the space much more efficiently.  There I go sounding like those interior designers that are on the shows my wife watches.  Oh well, what can I say?  I sometimes feel old and married, which by the way, I might like to add is just fine with me.

I think I’ll try and take a picture of my cube and post it here.  We’ll see if I remember the digital camera tomorrow.
