Some of you may know that I spent this weekend on a project like none I’ve ever undertaken. I modified Kirsten’s and my entertainment center. This past spring we got a new TV, a widescreen Samsung Slim Fit of 30″ or 32″, I can’t remember. Anyway, it no longer fit into the space in our entertainment center where the TV was supposed to go. However, we were loathe to get rid of the furniture because we could not find anything that matched as well with our other living room furniture. So, our new TV sat atop the entertainment center for months. Finally, in September we came up with the idea that we should just chop off the top of the piece and make it a TV stand. Well, this weekend, that is what I did. I purchased a jig saw, two regular manual saws, some clamps, wood glue, jig saw blades, a large plastic tarp, some 2×4x4s to use as guides while cutting with the jig saw, and a custom cut piece of ply wood for the back of the entertainment center (cut for me by Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse). I also borrowed my mother-in-law’s electric sander.
At the beginning of the weekend we started with this:
And finally made it to this:
My first ever handy man project around the house is complete! I have to say it made me feel fairly useful around the house, whereas in the past I’ve always shied away from such projects. It also felt good to get in there and really get a chance to use some power tools! You can view the entire set of photos for the project (about 45 or so) on my Flickr account by clicking on either of the pictures above.
