This evening, before I began my mad dash to type out 3,000 words in my novel for this month’s competition, I got up the gumption to install Ubuntu Server Edition 6.10. It was actually very easy. I’m running it on a Pentium III 850MHz machine with 384MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive - it’s a fairly nice machine for what I want to use it for. That use would be, yes you guessed it! Web development!
Ubuntu server edition automatically prompts you during installation if you want it to setup the necessary components for a LAMP server. Of course, I don’t have everything configured the way I would like it yet, and I don’t have the machine up and running on my home network yet, so I still have quite a bit to do. I’m just proud of the fact that I have it installed at all. My next task is learning some Linux command line as I would really love to avoid having to install some GUI like Gnome or KDE.
I’m both excited and nervous as I take my first step into a world that I’ve spent so much of my life trying to avoid. I mean, up until tonight, my Linux experience amounts to using the bootable Knoppix CD and staring at the screen on a Linux firewall box for a workbench area at work - and not knowing what the heck is scrolling across the screen.
I’m feeling good in the knowledge that I’m on my way to fulfilling yet another of my technology resolutions for 2006. Yikes, 2006 is going to draw to a close here quickly. I need to get on some of those other ones!
For you Linux pros out there who read my site, advice? Online resources to learn? Books? I’m listening.
