2007 Technology Resolutions Roundup

December 31st, 2007 by Benjamin

Starting in 2006, I posted my technology resolutions for the coming year.  I then reviewed the resolutions at the end of the year to see how I had fared.  Similarly, at the start of 2007 I posted my technology resolutions for this year.  So, “how did I do?” you ask?  Let’s find out!

  1. Finish the music collection project.  Status: Incomplete.
  2. Delve deeper into web development.  Status: Complete.
  3. Learn Windows scripting languages.  Status: Incomplete.
  4. Organize my and Kirsten’s digital photos.  Status: Incomplete.
  5. Nail down workstation deployment on Mac and PC.  Status: Complete.

I learned a lot this year about technology and as it turns out, not much of it pertained to my personal resolutions on technology.  I did delve deeper into web development, learned lots more about WordPress, XHTML/CSS, and even some PHP; but I didn’t even touch Windows Scripting this year.  I attribute my apparent lack of progress this year to several key factors:

  1. A promotion into a management position.  True, it still is low level management, but I still had to give up working on many of the technical projects that I handled before the promotion so that I could take on managerial responsibilities.  This is why I didn’t even touch Windows scripting.  It’s funny, that this reason is also why I can count goal 5 as complete without having done a whole lot myself.  One of my staff really nailed deployment at the Help Desk this year.
  2. My changing interests in technology.  I used to be really into workstation administration, deployment, and management.  My interests, in all areas of life - not just technology - wax and wane.  This year, my interests in web development and design really peaked.
  3. Time.  When I graduated from Iowa, I really thought I would have more time on my hands now that I didn’t have that pesky homework to worry about.  What a joke.  If anything, I have less time than ever.  I really have to pick and choose what topics I want to delve into and learn.

Overall, I consider this year a success in my technology exploits.  I really learned more about Linux, particularly Ubuntu Desktop edition.  I’ve been using Windows Vista at work for over a year now.  I’m very excited for my 2008 technology resolutions which I shall hopefully release tomorrow, on January 1st!

I know how daunting it can be to try to organize digital photos because one of my wife’s hobbies is photography. (Some of her work can be seen here: http://picasaweb.google.com/zalaster/Landscapes and here: http://picasaweb.google.com/zalaster/VermontTripLandscapes

We got Picasa2 recently and it took what looked to be an impossible task and made it so managable that in less than a day, I had over 5000 images sorted into neat categories. The seamless ability to make web albums and gift CD’s has also been very useful. The program even found a lost directory I had buried and allowed us to recover some long forgotten pics of the kids.
