First Caucus Experience a Thrill

January 4th, 2008 by Benjamin

Kirsten and I went to the Iowa Republicans’ "SuperCaucus" last night held at the Coralville Holiday Inn.  We didn’t know what to expect.  We went out for dinner first, a bit rushed, and ended up making it in plenty of time to the event.

We were greeted by long lines snaking their way back out of the Holiday Inn conference center into the main lobby.  There were greeters stationed there with forms to fill out to register for the Republican party so that you could participate in the Caucus.  Kirsten and I were already registered Republicans, so we didn’t have to worry.  After about fifteen minutes, we finally made it into another line waiting in the line for Coralville Precinct number two, to check in and get our voting ballot.  Movement through this line took another ten minutes.

We threaded our way into the main conference hall, packed beyond capacity, to hear the speaker get things underway.  We heard representatives from the Huckabee, Romney, Thompson, and McCain campaigns speak about why we should vote for their candidates and then the voting began.  All said, we were out of there in just under an hour.

We got the chance to meet and speak with some really cool people including some retired Naval officers and Marines.  They had some really neat stories to tell about previous caucuses that they had been involved with including some of those for Ronald Reagan.

Kirsten and I were pleasantly surprised by the experience there.  We had a blast sitting at home afterwards, sipping some red wine and watching the news channels track, analyze, and report on the progress of the evening.  Rarely it seems, is Iowa so heavily scrutinized by the big media.

Leave it to Robert to come up with some witty yet existential banter.
