So I’ve often read about the ability to have Google apps function on your domain. With the recent release of Google Sites, a collaboration and very “Microsoft SharePoint-esque” app, I was really intrigued to get access to these cool features. So I signed up.
Their standard plan is free of charge for personal or organizational use. They offer a “Premium Plan” which costs $50 a year per user for more storage and basically more support. I went with the standard plan to get my feet wet and see how things worked. I have to say, the setup process, combined with how easy the Dreamhost webpanel is to work with, has really been a snap.
I’m now using the Gmail interface for sending and receiving mail at my webarnold.net email address, I have a custom Google Calendar, Sites, Start Page, and Docs site also already set up and functioning. When last I checked the new custom DNS records hadn’t fully propagated yet, but I imagine by tomorrow morning everything will be working just fine.
I’ll have some more in-depth reviews of the individual apps as I get around to using them, but for now, let’s say, I’m pretty excited to be playing around with this stuff.

Just this weekend I got the mail portion of Google Apps working. It is a nice suite of services, however I don’t know how useful it is for just my domain. I have been thinking it might be nice for Rebekah and I together though.
Yeah, my host was using Squirrel mail for their webmail app, which doesn’t really cut it for me after using Gmail so often. If I was using my email address that I have through my host more often, this would be a definite bonus.
I’m thinking that a Google Site might be useful for my gaming group….
Where is the follow up!?
It’s coming! Google Sites first, then I’ll move on to other Google Apps.
