I decided that I liked the idea of my “technology resolutions” last year. I didn’t accomplish every one of them, but six out of ten isn’t too bad. In any event, I find myself encouraged enough to post some technology resolutions for 2007. I put some thought into these as I want to improve my results for this year. Entering the proverbial “real world” has opened my eyes to many things, one of which is that I don’t have as much time to accomplish things that I would like. While in school my mantra always became “as soon as I graduate and don’t have this homework to work on all the time, I’ll be able to get so much more done!” I’ve found that to just not be true. Prioritzing tasks, organizing oneself, and generally trying to be efficient in getting things done are all ways to improve your chances of getting everything done that you want to.
In an effort to prioritize my goals in technology for this year, I have cut the number of resolutions in half. I’m fairly certain that I have not particularly done a better job of `1So, without further ado, here are my 2007 technology resolutions:
- Finish the music collection project. This means finish putting all our CDs in iTunes, making sure all the id3 tags are as organized as possible, and figuring out an easy way to share both the music and the files themselves across our network.
- Delve deeper into web development. This goal could be met in a vareity of ways but the ones that would be most important to me include getting my development environment up and running (a LAMP server), developing my own Webarnold.net WordPress theme, integrate Kirsten and my Flickr photos in the website, and learning more about general web design technologies and principles.
- Learn Windows scripting languages like VBscript and WMI to aid in my Windows Workstation management both at work and at home.
- Organize Kirsten and my pictures on our home desktop computer. Then I want to develop a backup system to have these burned to CDs or DVDs for archiving.
- Nail down workstation deployment methods using Ghost Solution Suite 2.0, SMS, and Mac OS X deployment to make deployment at work much easier. I’ve picked up skills with these over the past year, but I really want to nail this in 2007. I want to innovate the process at work to make things much easier and take less of my time.
There you have it. My current 2007 Technology Resolutions list. I may add to this as time progresses. We shall see.
