With the exception of technology, I haven’t traditionally set new years resolutions for myself. Pick your cliche, a fear of failure, lack of drive or ambition, or just plain irresoluteness. I’ve liked how the technology resolutions have gone and I do feel that I at least tried to fulfill them. Therefore, this year, I am expanding the program to "2008 Resolutions" that will include things both from technology and everyday life.
- Take control of my "digital world." This means getting my music, pictures, and other files under control. I want things organized, easily accessible, and backed up on a regular schedule. There is a particular aspect to this in that I want an organized, online photo album for friends and family to peruse (i.e. Flickr).
- Develop a custom WordPress theme for Webarnold. I’ve been dabbling with this for the past two years. It’s time to just sit down and do it already!
- Finish a rewrite of my novel. I wrote (most) of a novel in November of this year. I want to go back through and rewrite so that I have a presentable draft by the end of the year.
- Post an average of fifteen times a month to Webarnold. I haven’t always paid this blog enough attention and I’d like to start bucking that trend. Also, let’s toss in raising family and friends awareness of the site and setting my wife up to post to Webarnold.
- Upgrade my wife and my home’s wireless network to Draft 802.11N (or the final ratified version). Out wireless network suffers from time to time when we are both going hard on our laptops. I’d like to upgrade to a new router with better coverage and perhaps USB network sharing to share our printer and add a network attached storage device.
- Enter the ring and learn some real web development skills. I could accomplish this in several different ways, mainly, I’d like to try and tackle some PHP.
- Commit to Franklin Covey planning system. I started using the system in 2007 (for the second time, I tried once in undergrad and just wasn’t committed enough). I’d like to get myself organized using the planning pages and really use them this time.
- Exercise Regularly. This is one that you’ll see many people making, I’m sure. I’m no exception. I realize that I’ve let the exercise fall by the way side for far too long. It’s time, once again, to hit the gym. I’ll define "regularly" as three times a week for the purposes of this resolution.
- Get up at the same time everyday. I haven’t really decided what this time will be, although I’m leaning towards something between five and six o’clock. I’ve heard that it really can help your body adjust and get ready for the day if you get up at the same time each morning. I’d like to find out (and what a great time to get my exercise in).
There you have it folks, my 2008 New Years resolutions. At first pass, this really seems like quite a load to try and bite off in one year. I think I’m up to the challenge, however, and I’m excited at the prospect of improving myself. I’m going to try and post a regular update throughout the year on how I’m doing on various aspects of these resolutions. I realize goals may change and these are anything but set in stone.

I *heart* Franklin Covey planning.
Good resolutions, Benjamin!
PHP is a good place to start. You could also checkout Ruby on Rails. If you do, I would definitely use a book to go through the tutorial. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll give you some links.
